What is in a word anyway? It is just a bunch of letters that make a sound when pronounced. But why do some words bother us more than others.
For example, I hate the word "cunt". I have only used it a few times and it was aimed at someone in extreme anger that I felt was too stupid to understand any other word in the English language. At that moment, it conveyed my true feelings. Other than that, I hate the word, and I ask people around me not to use it.
Some people argue that it is a "gendered" word - meaning that it only applies to women. I don't believe that -- and I doubt that the English would agree. I can't count the number of times I have seen two guys greet each other and one exclaims, "How are you, you little cunt!". There were no women nearby, so I don't see how it had anything to do with women.
And so the feminist writer shared with me her feelings. I could have done without but I decided to listen and try to comprehend and appreciate her point of view.
"When we compare things that are inanimate objects, to real life people in real life situations, we are degrading people, because we are putting them into categories with objects. That dehumanizes them."
Uh. OK.
She says that the message being pushed is that women exist solely for the pleasure of men. I disagree ... I think that fleshlights exist solely for the pleasure of men. :) I know, that probably won't sit well with everyone, but so be it. It is just a word ... right??
And yes, I know there are some phrases that are very much gender specific ... such as "don't be a pussy" or "he throws like a girl". But even my wife (who is FEMALE, the last time I checked) will get mad while driving and yell "STOP DRIVING LIKE A GIRL". Go figure.
It is just a word ... :) You can find more writings like this on LoveWorks Magazine.
